These Schedules will support implementation of the National Firearms Register (NFR).
Responsibility for firearms management in Australia is shared between the Commonwealth and state and territory governments (states). The Commonwealth is responsible for matters relating to the import and export of firearms, while states have responsibility for all matters relating to licensing, possession, transfer, storage, registration and use of firearms.
The NFR will provide a mechanism to share high quality, reliable firearms and firearms ownership information between Australian jurisdictions to ensure that police and other law enforcement agencies have the tools they need to keep themselves and the community safe.
